I also got a good chunk of my information from Hellboy: The Companion, and while I realize it's not as readily available as a wikipedia page, I figure citing it as a reference is better than not.
Canon Point: Garden of Souls - Right after visiting Roger's grave with Liz.

Setting: The world Hellboy and B.P.R.D. takes place in is essentially the same world as our own. It has the same countries, the same cities, the same borders, and so on. Still, while there are the same in many ways, there are also some big differences that contribute to how this world works and functions. So let’s get right to it, shall we?

One thing that makes this world different from our own is one simple fact: aliens, gods, and monsters all exist, and they’re a big problem. Some of them aren’t so bad, but more often than not, they run amok and try to hurt people, endanger them, or bring about the end of the world in some way or another. However, it isn’t as simple as “these things exist”, and there are several key paranormal figures and elements that work to shape the Hellboy universe into what it is.

Hollow Earth
In the Hellboy universe, the Earth is actually hollow. It is inhabited by a subterranean race that was left to live inside the Earth for ages. They intended to return to the surface and reclaim their place there. They kidnapped Liz and used her to abilities to power war machines meant to help overthrow mankind, although they were stopped by Abe, Johann, and Roger, and Liz was rescued. However, they are still alive and have not changed their plans of eventually returning to the surface.

Fairies
The fairies in the Hellboy universe are not necessarily the tiny creatures with wings that one would normally picture. Rather, the word “fairies” is used as an umbrella term that houses creatures like trolls, pixies, elves, gnomes, selkies, and so on. Encounters and sightings of these creatures have become increasingly rare, due to most of them gradually disappearing or dying out. Some of these creatures don’t cause much trouble and are content to live while they still can, while others are determined to return to power by any means necessary.

The Ogdru Jahad
The Dragon, Ogdru Jahad were originally seven gigantic monsters created by a spirit called Anum, and they were extremely powerful and potentially destructive. Afraid of what they were capable of, Watchers begged Anum to remove the Ogdru Jahad since they could not be destroyed. So, Anum imprisoned the Ogdru Jahad in shells made of crystal and sent them away.

Unfortunately, while the Ogdru Jahad were imprisoned, they were not without power, nor were they forgotten. While their existence was still met with fear and awe, there were others – such as Rasputin – that knew of their powers, and wanted to summon and use them to change and reshape the Earth.

The Ogdru Hem
The Ogdru Hem are the 369 ‘children’ of the Ogdru Jahad. They were born after darkness entered the Ogdru Jahad, and became the first creatures on Earth. While the Ogdru Hem couldn’t be completely destroyed since their spirits remained, they were still dealt with. Most were ‘cast out on the wind’, while the rest were trapped in under the sea or inside the Earth. However, while trapped, the Ogdru Hem are still alive and, like the Ogdru Jahad, still have power. Although they are easier to bring back, as they already reside on Earth.

It was not unheard of for the spirits of the Ogdru Hem to return, or for the trapped ones to be released. The Ogdru Hem can cause massive change and destruction, and also have a connection with the Ogdru Jahad – this makes them extremely useful and important to anyone that wants to bring about the return of the Ogdru Jahad.

Project Ragna Rok
Project Ragna Rok was something that shaped and influenced an important aspect of the Hellboy universe. Plotted by Grigori Rasputin, he promised Hitler that this would be a miracle that would win him the war. Project Ragna Rok was originally meant to be a way to bring about the apocalypse by releasing the Ogdru Jahad from their prison, but Rasputin failed to bring them back out. Instead, Hellboy was summoned to Earth in the ruins of a church in East Bromwich.

The Frogs
The frogs were monsters originally spawned by the creature, Sadu-Hem (one of the Ogdru Hem). When the Cavendish expedition arrived at a Hyperborean temple, Sadu-Hem was found and awoken, and several of the explorers – the Cavendish brothers, and Sven Olafsen – into frog monsters. Sadu-Hem was later defeated by Hellboy, Liz, and Abe in Cavendish Hall. That was not the last of Sadu-Hem, though. In 2004, B.P.R.D. investigators discovered a fungus spore in the ruins of Cavendish Hall, which was actually new form for Sadu-Hem. It was contained in a B.P.R.D. lab and allowed to grow, but was stolen and took over the body of another man. It transformed other people into the frog monsters, which were much stronger, faster, and could take more damage than any regular human. Beyond that, they were also capable of taking human form, which made them difficult to spot.

Sadu-Hem was defeated once again, but the frog monsters were still around, they were breeding, and they were changing other people into frogs as well. The B.P.R.D. continued to hunt down and eliminate the frog populations over the next two years, and in 2006 things changed again. With the assistance of the C.E.O. of the Zinco corporation – at the time taking on the persona of the Black Flame – the frogs managed to summon yet another one of the Ogdru Hem, Katha-Hem. However, while the frogs and Katha-Hem did a great deal of damage, Liz Sherman managed to destroy it, and both the Black Flame and many of the remaining frogs fell into a massive crack in the Earth. However, both the Black Flame and the frogs survived, and ended up finding and joining forces with the subterranean race living inside the Earth.

Naturally, all of this means trouble for everyone involved, but thankfully there is a solution to all of this, and that solution is almost always the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

The B.P.R.D. was formed in 1944, following Hellboy being brought into the world after the final stages of Project Ragna Rok. Professor Trevor Bruttenholm brought Hellboy back to an air force military base in New Mexico, and soon after he created the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

The Bureau exists to protect the people of Earth from any paranormal threats that the world is faced with, and receives government funding from several countries, although it mostly comes from America and the United Kingdom. The existence of the B.P.R.D. is also nothing new, or even a secret. The organization works in the public eye, and frequently investigates and takes care of issues that civilians report to them.

They also worked to track and hunt down the frog monsters while they were still running rampant, and eventually moved to a large, abandoned research facility in the Colorado mountains. However, the facility was last inhabited by a group of Nazi scientists, and it left them with a great deal of secret files and documents to go through, along with everything else they were working on.

The B.P.R.D. mostly has human agents working for them; scholars, former soldiers or police officers, scientists, and so on. Kate Corrigan is one of their human agents, who went from a consultant, to field agent, to field director, to a special agent meant to communicated with and help the enhanced talent agents.

The "enhanced talent" agents are people with abilities or appearances that go above and beyond what a normal human can do. These can range from the relatively small, like a psychic or a medium, to something much larger. The notable agents, both past and present, have been Hellboy (a demon with a stone right hand meant to help bring about the apocalypse), Liz Sherman (a pyrokinetic), Roger (a homunculus), Johann Kraus (an ectoplasmic medium whose body was destroyed, his spirit now lives in a containment suit), Ben Daimio (a former Marine that was killed and came back to life), and the fishman himself, Abe Sapien. Their presence can be frightening or unsettling to some, but like everyone else in the B.P.R.D., they're all here to help.

All in all, it's the same world as our own, except there are all sorts of paranormal nasties running around. Abe and the rest of the B.P.R.D. are around to try and stop everything from getting out of hand.

Personality: Being a fishman, Abe’s appearance could be startling to some and downright scary to others. It’s something he’s grown to accept over the years, but it’s still a bit difficult. While he has mostly accepted who he is and how he looks, there are times when he still struggles with his appearance. Even though Abe no longer wears a disguise when he goes out on missions, he still envies many of his fellow human (or at least human-looking) agents, as they can come and go as they please. Abe can never really feel ‘at home’ in the B.P.R.D. due to the way he was brought in and how the higher-ups have treated him and others in the past. He has contemplated leaving the B.P.R.D. before, but has never actually followed through because he knows he would never be able to live a normal life, thanks to his appearance. Abe may not always enjoy living and working with the B.P.R.D., but he also knows that there really isn’t anywhere else he could go.

Abe has never been very comfortable with getting a whole lot of attention, either. Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly easy for him to blend in with a crowd, thanks to his looks. Unlike Hellboy, Abe frequently struggles when it comes to dealing with the public, and is usually a bit awkward when it comes to discussing things with people outside of the B.P.R.D., especially if they’re young. However, he isn’t only like this when out on missions or dealing with the public. Back with the Bureau, Abe usually prefers if conversations don’t center around him when talking to people. This is especially true after learning of his previous life as Langdon Everett Caul, and meeting the ghost of his dead wife. If the subject of his past (and anything he may know of it) comes up, it’s far more likely that he’ll avoid the topic rather than go into any sort of detail. This can sometimes make him seem standoffish or aloof, though it’s more of a discomfort with having a great deal of attention on him rather than an actual problem he has with people.

Still, while Abe may seem a bit awkward or distant at first, he’s actually far from it. He doesn’t have very many friends, but he cares deeply for the ones he does have. Hellboy and Liz helped Abe through his first years in the B.P.R.D. They were people he was able to connect to and form friendships with when he couldn’t get out and start relationships with people in the outside world. It helped him to adjust, and it’s made life a lot easier for him. He’d also developed friendships with Kate Corrigan, Roger, and Johann, and they’re just as important to him as anyone else. All of Abe’s friendships are based on mutual trust and respect for one another, and he always does his best to treat his friends with the same degree of care and respect.

Beyond that, Abe will do just about anything to make sure his friends are safe, and if one of them is in trouble, he won’t rest until he’s managed to help them. It doesn’t matter if there’s a chance he’ll get hurt or even killed – if someone he cares about is in danger, he’ll do whatever he can to get them back to safety.

Abe hasn’t had very many friends throughout the course of his life, so he’ll do everything he can to make sure the few he does have are safe, cared-for, respected, and happy.

Sadly, if something Abe’s responsible for goes wrong, it’s far more likely that he’ll blame himself before blaming anybody else. It doesn’t matter how something happened or if it could have been helped or not, Abe will almost always blame himself. He’ll spend his time thinking about what could have been done, what he should have done, what could have happened if things had gone differently, and so on. Even if he’s reminded and reassured that something isn’t his fault and that things happen, Abe will most likely blame himself, anyway. He also holds onto these feelings of guilt for long periods of time before letting them go, if he ever lets go of them at all. This can sometimes make him act a bit tactless and rude. The “it’s all my fault” mentality he sometimes dwells in has made him trivialize other people’s experiences before, even if they were related to the same experience, or were trying to make him feel better. It isn’t a healthy attitude, but it’s one he can’t seem to grow out of.

Even so, as good as Abe tries to be and as much as he tries to be there for the people he cares for, he has an bad habit of withdrawing himself whenever he’s upset or if there’s something on his mind. Rather than seeking out his friends to discuss things, he distances himself from them and attempts to deal with it and figure things out on his own. It got particularly bad after Abe encountered the ghost of Edith, his former wife. Instead of discussing what happened, Abe kept what happened a secret, stopped going out on field missions, grew distant from his friends, and was much more private than usual. It unfortunately took the death of Roger to finally snap him out of it, though that’s not to say Abe no longer withdraws himself whenever he’s upset.

Abe is fiercely determined when it comes to getting things done, though, and so he usually does what he can to complete a task without much trouble. If he has a goal, he’ll do anything he can to make sure he reaches it. It doesn’t matter if the odds aren’t in his favour, if he’s injured, or if there’s a chance he won’t succeed; he’ll keep on going and he’ll do everything to make sure that he does what has to be done. He's also very quick to act when under pressure or in immediate danger. In the field, things can go to Hell (no pun intended) very quickly, and there isn’t always time for complex rituals or talking things out or anything like that.

Sometimes the best solution is to find whatever one can and use it to beat the problem senseless until it stops moving. This is something Abe understands very well, and it’s something he’s used to. Whenever he’s dealing with something that’s out of his control, if he doesn’t have access to a gun or any other kind of weapon, he’ll search around for anything else he can use to protect himself and fight off whatever it is he’s facing. While Abe knows that it’s usually wiser to have a solution ready, sometimes things don’t go as planned, and implementing blunt force trauma, burning, or hacking something to pieces can get the job done just as well.

As far as hobbies go, Abe isn’t exactly the most exciting person around. More often than not, he usually spends his time enjoying all kinds of literature. Stories, poetry, non-fiction... he really isn’t that picky. He can appreciate all kinds of writing, and does so quite frequently. It may not be the most exciting thing, but considering how stressful working with the B.P.R.D. can be, something as simple as spending the night reading a good book makes for an excellent break. As far as Abe is concerned, that's good enough for him.

Basically, Abe is a guy that usually tries to make the best out of what life has given him. He ends up struggling with things more often than not, but tries not to let that stop him for long. Things can get extremely difficult, but thankfully there are simple pleasures and friends that are there to make life feel a little bit easier.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:
Since Abe is amphibious, he is capable of living both in water and on land. He's an excellent swimmer, and can survive underwater without any sort of suit or breathing apparatus. This makes him particularly useful when it comes to any sort of mission or task that involves water, as he's capable of going down and exploring without having to worry about coming back up for air.

However, while Abe can survive outside of water, he can only do so for up to a week before needing to return to water. Although after a couple of days without submerging himself, Abe's skin tends to become dry and very itchy, and it would continue to get worse as time goes on. In order to avoid having this happen, Abe makes a point to sleep in a water tank at home with the Bureau, and usually sleeps in filled bathtubs whenever he's out on a mission.

Abe's physical strength is something worth noting, as well. As far as strength goes, he's been shown smashing through doors, throwing around and attacking monsters his size or larger, and flipping over a small truck full of gas. Abe's physical strength is nowhere near, say Superman or even Hellboy levels, but it's certainly above average. He's also extremely tough and durable, is capable of surviving damage that would normally be fatal to most humans.

As far as limitations go, my suggestion is that Abe would be more susceptible to injury, and would be unable to keep going for as long as he normally would back home. His physical strength would also be decreased, too.

Inventory: Just his clothes, his cellphone, and a handgun. (Though it won't be loaded when he arrives in Sacrosanct.)
Appearance:

Abe is pretty strange looking, as far as everything goes. He has blue eyes (that lack pupils), greenish-blue skin, sharp teeth, gills, and fins. His appearance makes him look like some kind of fish-monster, which can be alarming for anyone that hasn't been exposed to anything like him before. Abe usually sticks to just wearing a pair of black shorts and his belt, though occasionally he'll wear a shirt and he usually wears a B.P.R.D. vest on missions.
Age: Counting his life as Langdon Everett Caul, Abe would be 207 years old.

Samples
Log Sample: Coming to terms with everything that has happened recently – the Black Flame, Katha-hem, Roger’s death, Kate risking herself looking for a way to bring him back... things are difficult. With everything that goes on, one would think that it would be easier to get used to, even after all these years. Gods and monsters exist, lunatics will always try to bring on the end of the world, and people will die. That’s how it’s always been, and how it’ll always be. And yet, it's like everything just seems to be getting worse.

It feels as if everything is going to hell. Of course, for all he knows, that could be what’s actually happening. In this line of work, hardly anything is ever truly out of the question. Not that knowing that makes this easier on any of them.

However, if there’s something to positive to be taken from this, it’s that things seem to be relatively peaceful now.

There’s no real way of telling just how long it will last, but it’s something Abe can appreciate. It allows for more opportunities to relax... or to try relaxing, at least. Even with a book in his lap as a ready distraction, it’s difficult to think of anything but what’s happened over the past few months. What’s been done, what could have been done, what could have been avoided, what Hellboy would have done... ha.

What Would Hellboy Do? It’s hard to say for sure. Possibly punch the problem until it went away. Either way, Abe just hopes that, wherever he is, Hellboy is faring better than they are.

"Abe?" The voice is accompanied by a knock, although it's a bit pointless when his door is mostly open.

"Liz," Abe sets his book down and glances back at her, "Is something wrong?"

She shakes her head, "No, it's... they finally set up Roger's grave. I was just wondering if you wanted to visit it together."

"... Sure. Just give me a minute to get ready."

Network Sample:
Video
[The feed clicks on, revealing an oddly calm-looking fishman on the other end. Abe’s already gone through a small chunk of the network to see what’s up, and it’s clear enough that he’s not the only one who’s been brought here. Even so, it's better to test the waters. Just in case.]

So, if I’m getting this right... we’ve all been taken from our homes and brought to a space station without any known way of returning, correct? [Because if that really is the case, then things are going to be a lot more difficult.

... Still.

It could probably be worse
.]

I don’t suppose anyone here would know where to find a large source of water, would they? [If Abe is going to be here for a while, then he’ll need somewhere he can soak routinely, if he can’t get his hands on a tank or a bathtub.]
